What to expect from chiropractic treatment

What does chiropractic treatment involve?

Chiropractic is a course of treatment. The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the condition, how long it has been present and what you want out of the treatment. If you have been suffering from a recurring problem or have certain indications that puts you at risk from developing a recurrent problem your doctor will take this in to account when discussing the treatment plan with you.

Initial Consultation

This takes about 45 minutes. At your first visit, the doctor of chiropractic will take a full and detailed medical history and carry out a thorough physical, orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examination. Other investigations might also be necessary, such as X-rays or MRI scans.

The chiropractor will do what is possible to ease symptoms, but treatment cannot be guaranteed at the first visit. This will depend on the nature of the problem, the acuteness of symptoms on the day and whether x-rays have been taken. If it is appropriate, the doctor of chiropractic will treat you.

Second appointment – Report of findings

The doctor of chiropractic will

  • explain the findings from the examination
  • show you the developed x-rays or scans and explain any relevant findings.
  • explain the diagnosis and the course of treatment, which is most appropriate.

Once all your questions have been answered and you are happy to start, we commence the treatment. It is important that all you queries have been answered and that you have a good understanding of your problem. Our patients have found that this helps them achieve better long-term results.

Chiropractors use a wide range of gentle, specific manipulation techniques to unlock the stiff joints, to restore proper function and mobility, which in turn settles the pain. Chiropractors use a variety of soft tissue, massage techniques and exercise as part of the treatment. Modalities such as interferential and ultrasound may also be used.

Follow-up appointments

The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the condition, how long it has been present and what you want out of the treatment. If you have been suffering from a recurring problem or have certain indications that puts you at risk from developing a recurrent problem your chiropractor will take this in to account when determining what is best for you.

The pain only tells half the story. Just because the pain has eased, it does not mean that the problem is gone. A common mistake is to ignore the problem once the pain is gone - just to find the problem returning all to soon.

Once the pain has settled, further treatments will help to stabilise the vulnerable area and prevent reoccurrences of the problem. We always suggest a long-term exercise program to help you stay pain free and improve your overall health. Our patients find that chiropractic treatment works best when it is not used as a pain killer, but is used to keep the pain away.

We want you to stay free from problems in the longer term.
